The film tells the love story of pianist Chico and singer Rita from when they meet in '40s Havana. Havana is presented as, one big night club with fantastic music but racism, poverty and prostitution lurk not far below the surface. The music composed and arranged by Bebo Valdes is outstanding and the true star of the film, as the directors strived to present a defining moment in the development of jazz when so many Cuban musicians, such as Chano Pozo, went to the US and met American jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
