Havana Hosts World Festival of Cuban Casino Dance Style

The Casino is usually danced in pairs who make attractive turns and sways to the rhythm of salsa music; it is also danced in a round in a modality called Rueda de Casino. Pairs of dancers form a circle, with dance moves called out by one person which usually involve swapping of partners. This modality has become very popular in Cuba, Latin America and Europe.

The festival, titled "Baila en Cuba 2008" (Dance in Cuba 2008), was organized by the Paradiso Tour Agency and the Cuban Culture Ministry. The initiative includes performances by dance academies, workshops led by arts professors and exchanges with experts in the dancing style.

According to media reports, the event will feature concerts by renowned popular music bands like "Van Van," "Adalberto Alvarez y su Son," and "NG la Banda."

Attractions included in the event's program are choreography workshops and traditional Casino dance lessons.

The dance event, which was founded in 2006, has gathered dancers from Europe and Latin America, who have also taken part at lectures on Cuban popular dances like the Mambo, Rumba, Guaguanco, Cha Cha Cha and Conga.
