El Mayor / The Major (2020, Rigoberto López, English subtitles)
An epic tale of love, liberty and revolution, inspired by the life of Major General Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz (1841-1873, who led the Mambi army in the Camagüey region of central Cuba against Spanish colonial rule. He was defined by his loyalty to the revolution and to his comrades-in-arms, alongside his love for his wife Amalia. The film delves into events that forged the Cuban nation.
The National Day of Culture, celebrated every 20 October in Cuba, marks the day in 1868 when, following the capture of Bayamo city by independence forces, the people first sang the national anthem, ‘La Bayamesa’, a foundational act of Cuba’s national identity.
