Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta has just been nominated for the Goya Prize, awarded by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, as Best New Actor for his participation in the film “Yuli”, by Catalan filmmaker Icíar Bollaín.

The film was nominated in four other categories: Adapted Screenplay (Paul Laverty), Direction of Photography (Álex Catalán), Original Music (Alberto Iglesias) and Sound (Eva Valiño, Pelayo Gutiérrez and Alberto Ovejero).

“Yuli” is inspired by “No Way Home”, Acosta’s  autobiography, and tells the story of a poor black boy who, against the odds and even against his own will at first, becomes one of the greatest dancers in the world.

The film also features star performances by Laura De la Uz, Santiago Alfonso, Keyvin Martínez, the child actor Edilson Manuel Olbera, Yerlín Pérez, Andrea Doimeadios and Carlos Enrique Almirante, along with the participation of the Acosta Danza Company.

The choreographies were created by María Rovira and Raúl Reinoso, and the production was headed by Andrea Calderwood, Claudia Calviño and Juan Gordon.

The Goya Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 2, 2019.
