Cuban National Theatre Prize Winner Hilda Oates Dies in Havana

The news was received with deep sorrow by the National Council of Performing Arts, intellectuals and Cuban culture in general, as well as by relatives and friends.

She performed in important productions under the direction of the most prestigious Cuban theater directors, like Vicente and Raquel Revuelta, Berta Martinez, Roberto Blanco, Nelson Dorr, Hector Quintero, Jose Antonio Rodriguez and Armando Suarez del Villar.

Her repertoire included pieces by Cuban and foreign playwrights, among which Maria Antonia, Electra Garrigo, Santa Camila de la Habana Vieja, Dos viejos panicos, Requiem por Yarini, Bodas de sangre, La casa de Bernarda Alba, Yerma, Mariana and Macbeth stand out.

During her artistic career she received several awards, like the Prize for the Best Performance at Havana's Theater Festival (1980 y 1984), the Alejo Carpentier Medal, the National Culture Award, and the Raul Gomez Garcia Award given by the National Culture Workers Union, among others.
