Cuba Transforming Former Factories into Cultural Centres

The theatre company 'El Ciervo Encantado' (The Enchanted Deer) directed by Nelda Castillo, yesterday inaugurated its new space at the old Sergio 'Pipián' Martínez bicycle factory, near the Almendares river. Not far away, the Art Factory, a project led by musician X Alfonso, has taken shape at a former cooking oil plant.

Likewise, visual artist Alexis Leyva (Kcho) has turned a number of warehouses in Romerillo on the city outskirts, into a singular art laboratory, as part of a community cultural project.

The inauguration of 'El Ciervo Encantado' coincided with the beginning of the 8th Congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), which aims at rescuing and defending the nation's cultural values by seeking initiatives that satisfy the spiritual needs of an educated people.

Community projects like these are an obligatory reference in the efforts to improve Cubans' quality of life through art and culture.
