Guevara, who was Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Havana, was creator and founding president of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC, after its initials in spanish) in March 1959. He had been awarded the Felix Varela First Degree Distinction granted by the State Council of the Republic of Cuba, the highest distinction of Cuban culture.
In 2003, Alfredo Guevara was awarded the National Film Prize.
