Brazilian Union of Writers joins UNEAC’s call

The Brazilian Union of Writers (UBE) released a message Friday in support of the call of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in the face of the most recent threats from the U.S. government against the people of Cuba.

The manifesto of that entity, self-proclaimed as committed to democratic, republican and human values, demonstrates its solidarity with the Cuban people in the face of the escalation of economic violence imposed on the nation.

Cuba, a reference in health, education, culture and generosity, has a direct influence on the improvement of the quality of life in Brazil and in the world; around here, it is enough to remember the more than 11 thousand Cuban health agents who attended to millions of Brazilians, in the capitals and in the interior, through the Mais Médicos program, the message adds.

The members of the UBE explain in their letter that the largest of the Antilles, which has resisted U.S. strangulation for more than six decades, now faces what is perhaps its greatest challenge in the 21st century: the oil embargo.

Canceled flights and closed hotels hurt tourism, an important employer sector. The food does not arrive. The island, lacking natural resources, depends on imported inputs to manufacture medicines, the source adds, arguing that without fuel, there is no way for students and teachers to attend schools and universities.

It is a cowardice without limits. An attack not only on Cuba, but on all human beings who understand the meaning of the word humanity, continues the statement from the conglomerate of Brazilian writers.

In response to the call of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the UBE repudiates the U.S. embargo and offers its digital media, such as its website and social networks, for the demonstration of the writers of that country, the manifesto concludes.

As it has transpired this week, last Monday the important Mexican newspaper La Jornada published the UNEAC’s appeal to the artists and intellectuals of the world, which has obtained broad support from Cuban and Ibero-American intellectuals.
