Celebrate 10 years of Acosta Danza with a slice of Havana in London
Carlos Acosta’s talented, versatile Cuban dance company will showcase works from inspirational Hispanic choreographers including two UK premieres; 98 Días and Llamada.
The programme opens with celebrated Cuban choreographer George Céspedes’ La Ecuación (“the equation”). Céspedes has created his own style of social dance which embraces Cuban flair alongside a mathematical precision.
Olivier Award-winning Javier de Frutos’ 98 Días takes us back to Cuba in the 1920s. Spanish playwright, Federico García Lorca, found himself so enchanted by Cuba that a short visit turned into the happiest 98 days of his life. This vibrant work captures how it feels to fall in love with a place far from home.
Internationally acclaimed Goyo Montero created Llamada for Acosta Danza in 2023. The piece draws inspiration from Lorca’s Ode to Walt Whitman and explores sexuality, rage and faith.
The evening ends with De Punta a Cabo by Alexis Fernández and Yaday Ponce, performed by the entire ensemble. Set against the Malecón esplanade in Havana, this has all the hallmarks of Cuban culture, from classical dance to salsa and from pointe shoes to bare feet.
