Cuba is hoping for more medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games after its first silver and gold.

Robiel Yankiel Sol Cervantes has won the gold medal this week in the long jump, T46 disability class with a paralympic record of 7.46m. At the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo Robiel also recorded a jump of 7.46m, setting a Paralympic record in the T47 category, and winning the gold medal.

Only in April 2024 he achieved a spectacular World record and American record in the Xalapa 2024 World Para Athletics Grand Prix with a mark of 7.84m, breaking the previous record of 7.74m in the Long Jump.

Although Cuba only entered the Paralymics for the first time in 1992 in Barcelona, already only world powers such as the United States, Canada and Brazil surpass it in the historical medal table, due to the island’s strong movement of sports for people with disabilities.

That debut, in1992, incredibly produced gold medals for Enrique Cepeda (triple jump), Oscar Pupo (800 m) and Omar Turro (400 m), all in para-athletics.

And it has been precisely the field and track events that have been the most solid moments in terms of results, so much so that 36 of the 43 golds historically achieved were won in para-athletics.

Cuba went on to win 8 gold medals in Atlanta in 1996 and 9 in London in 2012. In London they achieved their most medals (17) and their best position in the medal table ever, closing in 15th place. At Rio de Janeiro in 2016 they came 18th.

Individually, the star runner Omara Durand stands out – who was then competing in the T13 category and then moved to T12 – who has eight gold medals and is in Paris hoping to achieve another three in 100, 200 and 400 metres.

Although para-athletics has the greatest responsibility to win medals, para-shooting and para-judo also have a good chance.

In addition to the collection of 36 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze medals that make up the total of 73 medals in para-athletics, Cuba has achieved para-judo (6-0-7) and para-swimming (1-2-2).
