Mejunje theatre: Changing attitudes around sexual diversity through theatre in rural areas

by: Cuban News Agency

To raise awareness around sexual diversity and against homophobia, the 'Me Incluyo' ('Me too') project has been rolled out in Villa Clara, the central Cuban province. There. this work has been an initiative of the Mejunje theatre company, which, directed by Ramón Silverio, takes art to remote areas.

After working in remote, hard to access, rural communities, it ends its summer programme with a tour of towns in Santa Clara, starting 25 August at La Movida, and will also go to the Air Base and La Gomera, according to Silverio.

The experience, both in previous tours and in this summer, has been a real success, since it has allowed the breaking down of prejudices and encouraged participation and dialogue with the population.

High quality theatre pieces such as 'Amor Líquido' and 'Las Cabañuelas' will be performed for the residents of those places off the beaten track.

So far the tour has taken in the towns of Bermejal, municipality of Santo Domingo; in Aguada de Moya, Vueltas, belonging to Camajuaní; El Roble, in Ranchuelo; Falcón, in Placetas; Emilio Córdoba, at Encrucijada, just to mention a few.

The project 'Me Incluyo' was created by Silverio in 2015 and is formed from actors of the Mejunje Company, under the common objective of bringing high quality art to those places that have less access to see theatre productions, as well as encouraging inclusive and non-discriminatory attitudes.
