Sustainable Initiatives

SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES

Cuba is the one country in the world that has been able to develop in an ecologically sustainable way according to the WWF, uniquely balancing rising living standards with ecologically sustainable practices.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union put an end to subsidised oil in the 1990s, Cubans were encouraged to produce as much of their food as possible using low impact ecological methods.

In Havana, urban organic allotments, 'organoponicos', now produce much of the city's food.

Cuba was one of the first to sign the Kyoto Protocol, the very first to move to energy efficient light bulbs, and has a highly developed recycling programme.

While Cuba now swaps oil with Venezuela in exchange for health care, it has developed renewable energy on a large scale including solar and wind generated electricity.
