Cuban film posters added to UNESCO's National Register as 'Memory of the World'

by: ONDI/Cubacine

The Cuban Cinematheque has received the certificate of registration of the Cuban film posters collection at the National Registry of UNESCO's 'Memory of the World' Programme.

The ceremony was held in the lobby of Cuba's National Film Institute ICAIC, attended by the president of the institute, Roberto Smith de Castro, the president of the National Committee of the Memory of the World Program of UNESCO, Nuria Gregori Torada plus UNESCO representatives, graphic designers, visual artists and cinema specialists. Torada said:

"The Cuban Posters collection is an essential part of ICAIC's heritage. They are the graphic expression that accompanied Cuban cinematography throughout the history of its development. From the first piece preserved in the Cuban Cinematheque, La Manigua or The Cuban Woman, 1915, for the film by the pioneer Enrique Díaz Quesada, to the last posters made for national films produced by ICAIC or independently to the industry, all contribute to a collection of high patrimonial value.

The well-known ICAIC posters marked a visual imprint and were exceptional within Cuba's visual arts. Originally conceived as ephemeral works for the promotion of a film, a show, an event or others, many of them were also works of art as they became part of the environment of various places. Undoubtedly, these pieces have contributed to the visual education of spectators for being such innovative proposals of great beauty, visual impact and communicative effectiveness."
