Cuban artists celebrate The Beatles's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album 50th anniversary

by: Prensa Latina

With a concert in the capital John Lennon Park, today (1 June 2017) Cuba remembers The Beatles, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, considered the best album by the legendary British band.

Organized by Cuban musician and composer X Alfonso, music critic Guille Vilar and the Ministry of Culture, the tribute to The Boys of Liverpool will take place at 18:00 local time, and will have the participation of seven national groups.

We want to remember an anthological work within the record production of those years. With its release, pop and rock music changed forever, as it was shown that it could include pieces with a complex realization and important lyrics, said Vilar in a press conference.

With that album, the Beatles reached a maturity that not only marked them, but all their contemporaries, added the cultural promoter and director of important musical programs.

He said that honoring Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr from Havana is a recognition of the cultural movement that they started and an opportunity to reiterate the call of the Cuban people for peace.

Among the artists invited to the event are Coro Renacer, La Vieja Escuela, The Kent, Sweet Lissy Project and the project La Flota, composed by Ernesto and David Blanco, Yissy García and X Alfonso.

Also participating are the children's theatre company La Colmenita, Eddy Escobar and his band, Gens and other guests.

Released on June 1, 1967, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is The Beatles' eighth album and won four Grammy Awards in 1968.

The production registered about 32 million sales and favorable opinions amongst music critics and the public.

For its innovative quality, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number one in its list of 500 best albums.

The musicians and admirers of the group count for thousands in Cuba and on 1 June we will honor an exceptional work of art in the history of music, assured Vilar.
